  4. Introduction

  7. Calendar Magic is an easy-to-use Windows (3.x or 95) based program
  8. that is entertaining, informative, educational, and of equal
  9. applicability in the home and in the office. Calendar Magic is
  10. "Freeware" and may be freely distributed, provided that no
  11. alterations are made to any file contained within the product.
  12.  
  13. Features of Calendar Magic include:
  14.  
  15. * Full year Gregorian, Hebrew, Indian National, Islamic civil and
  16.   Julian calendars for any year. The year range for Gregorian
  17.   calendars is 1582 to 9999, with equivalent year ranges for the
  18.   other calendar systems (except for the Indian National calendar
  19.   which only began in Gregorian year 1957).
  20.  
  21. * A side-by-side comparison of any of the above calendar systems
  22.   on a month-by-month basis. The display remains synchronised as
  23.   you change day, month and year values in either calendar system
  24.   being viewed.
  25.  
  26. * Lists of Western Christian festivals, Eastern Orthodox festivals
  27.   and Hebrew holy days for any (Gregorian) year.
  28.  
  29. * National days for any year for many countries including 
  30.   Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Netherlands,
  31.   New Zealand, South Africa, UK and USA.

  33. * "Date facts" for any date in the Gregorian, Hebrew, Indian 
  34.   National and Islamic civil calendars including day-of-the-week,

  36.   For the Gregorian calendar many other facts are displayed, such as
  37.   Julian day value, and year related information including
  38.   Dominical Letter(s), Julian Period, Golden Number, Solar Number,
  39.   Roman Indiction and Epact. Various special days are also
  40.   recognised (e.g. Halloween) as are modern Olympic years.

  42. * The ability to create, display, update and delete reminders for
  43.   events (birthdays, anniversaries, meetings etc.) for "this year",
  44.   "next year" or "every year". When Calendar Magic is started up,
  45.   both visual and audible warnings are given for "imminent" events
  46.   (those occurring within the next seven days) for which reminders
  47.   have been set. Out-of-date reminders are also automatically purged
  48.   by Calendar Magic.

  50. * "This is your life" information including day-of-the-week on which
  51.   you were born, number of days you have lived, your Zodiac sign, and
  52.   the day-of-the-week on which your next birthday falls.

  54. * Continuously updated display of date, time and a countdown to the
  55.   year 2000. Various year 2000 related facts of interest to those
  56.   involved in year 2000 software conversion projects.

  58. * Number of days between any two dates in the Gregorian calendar,
  59.   and list of the dates on which the 13th. of any month falls on a
  60.   Friday for any specified range of years.

  62. * An analysis of the Gregorian 400-year cycle, after which the
  63.   Gregorian calendar repeats itself.

  65. * Special calendars for 1582 (the year when the Gregorian calendar
  66.   began) and 1752 (the year when Great Britain and its colonies changed

  73. What's New in Version 6.x?
  74. --------------------------
  75.  
  76. Version 6.x represents a major enhancement to Calendar Magic with
  77. the introduction of a "calendar comparison" command button to invoke
  78. the side-by-side comparison of any two calendar systems (Gregorian,
  79. Hebrew, Indian National, Islamic civil and Julian) on a month-by-
  80. month basis. The display is continuously updated in line with any
  81. changes you make by:
  82.  
  83. (a) decrementing or incrementing a month being displayed,
  84.  
  85. (b) decrementing or incrementing a year value being displayed,
  86.  
  87. (c) clicking on, then changing by editing any year value,
  88.  
  89. (d) clicking on any day value to highlight it in red. Note that
  90.     equivalent dates are always shown in red,
  91.  
  92. (e) changing the calendar system by clicking the relevant option
  93.     button.

  95. Note also that the Indian National calendar did not commence
  96. until (Gregorian) year 1957, so that comparisons with the Indian
  97. National calendar cannot be made for years prior to 1957.

  99. Side-by-side comparisons are available for the Gregorian date
  100. range November 1, 1582 to December 31, 9999 and equivalent
  101. ranges in the Hebrew, Islamic and Julian calendar systems (note
  102. the remark in the previous paragraph with respect to the Indian
  103. National calendar system).

  124. Installing Calendar Magic
  125. -------------------------

  127. To install Calendar Magic on a Windows (3.x or 95) based system,
  128. close down all running applications and then run the program 
  129. setup.exe on the Calendar Magic floppy disk. The default 
  130. installation directory is c:\calmagic but you are given the 
  131. opportunity to specify another directory and/or drive.

  148. The first eight files are installed in the directory you have
  149. specified. The remaining four are installed in your \windows\system
  150. directory, provided that more recent versions of these files do not
  151. already exist in that directory.

  154. Calendar Magic as a Company Promotional Item

  158. company and  maintaining contact details on clients' PCs. Would

  170. Reminder Imminent Event "Beep" Facility
  171. ---------------------------------------

  173. When Calendar Magic is initiated, you may hear a "beep" and the text
  174. "Remind Me Now!" on one of the command buttons will be coloured red
  175. rather than the normal black. This indicates that an event, for which
  176. you have set a reminder, is less than seven days away. As soon as you
  177. click on either of the command buttons associated with reminders, the
  178. text colour will revert to black.

  181. Additional Days, Events and Dates of National Significance
  182. ----------------------------------------------------------

  184. If you would like any additional days, events or dates added to
  185. Calendar Magic, which are of significance in your country, please
  186. send the details to EuroSoft for inclusion in a future release of
  187. the product. Details required are:
  188.  
  189.     1. Country
  190.  
  191.     2. Day/event/date of significance.
  192.  
  193.     3. How is the date calculated each year? Is the event always
  194.            on the same date (e.g. January 7) or, if not, how is the
  195.            date determined each year (e.g. second Tuesday in March)?

  197. Anyone providing significant new material, which is added to Calendar
  198. Magic, will be sent a free copy of the updated product.

  201. Limitations and Restrictions
  202. ----------------------------
  203.  
  204. Calendar Magic is designed to handle Gregorian calendar dates from
  205. October 15, 1582 to December 31, 9999 and can produce:
  206.  
  207.         (a) Hebrew calendars for Hebrew years 5344 through 13759
  208.  
  209.         (b) Indian National calendars for Saka years 1879 to 9920 
  210.  
  211.         (c) Islamic calendars for Islamic years 990 through 9666
  212.  
  213.         (d) Julian calendars for Julian years 8 through 9999
  214.  
  215. The selection of National Days, however, is only produced for
  216. Gregorian years from 1990 onwards, because of the obvious dangers
  217. of producing such information for years too far in the past.
  218.  
  219. Note that the "civil" Islamic calendar calculated in Calendar
  220. Magic is not uniformly used in all Islamic countries and may also
  221. vary slightly from the "religious" Islamic calendars in various
  222. countries. In practice, there is no complete consensus among
  223. Islamic countries, religious leaders and scientists with regard
  224. to how the Islamic calendar should be defined.
  225.  
  226. With regard to the signs of the Zodiac, different reference sources
  227. provide slightly different versions of the starting and ending dates
  228. for the periods covered by the various signs. For example, one
  229. reference source may state that the period covered by Taurus starts
  230. on April 20 and another may indicate April 21. As a result, Calendar
  231. Magic provides alternatives in these border-line situations.

  247. An Explanation of Some Terms
  248. ----------------------------

  250. Dominical Letter(s)
  251. -------------------
  252.  
  253. The Dominical Letter for a year is A if the first of the year is a
  254. Sunday, B if the second of the year is a Sunday etc. A leap year
  255. has two Dominical Letters, the first calculated as just described,
  256. the second being the preceding letter (with G "preceding" A). 
  257.  
  258. Golden Number (G)
  259. -----------------
  260.  
  261. The Golden Number for a year indicates its position within the 19-year
  262. Metonic (lunar) cycle. This is the period after which the phases of the
  263. moon repeat (approximately) on the same calendar dates.

  265. Solar Number (S)
  266. ----------------
  267.  
  268. This value indicates the position of a year within the 28-year solar
  269. cycle. This is the period after which week days and calendar dates
  270. repeat in the Julian calendar.

  272. Roman Indiction (I)
  273. -------------------

  275. This value indicates the position of a year within an ancient Roman
  276. 15-year tax cycle.

  278. Julian Period
  279. -------------

  281. A 7980-year cycle devised by Scaliger in the sixteenth century by
  282. taking the product of the 3 values above (19x28x15 = 7980). For its
  283. starting point, Scaliger picked the last year in which the values
  284. of G, S and I above were all equal to 1, namely 4713 BC. The next
  285. time these values will all return to 1 is therefore -4712 + 7980 =
  286. 3268. Try using the "Gregorian Date Facts" button with 1/1/3268 and
  287. look at the values of G, S, I and the Julian Period.

  290. -----

  292. The age of the moon at the start of a year. The value of Epact is
  293. an integer in the range 1 to 30.
